Let’s get something clear from the start. I love bread. I love pasta. I find the sight and smell of a freshly baked croissant very hard to resist with my morning cup of coffee. All of these delicious products are made from wheat. However, wheat is the most problematic food in modern society. The term “gluten intolerance” seems to be becoming more and more commonplace. Many people suffer from gut disorders such as Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis, Leaky Gut and bloating. Much of these can be attributed to the consumption of wheat. So, what is the big deal with wheat?

Gut health and the Ileocecal Valve (ICV)

One of the most common reasons people make appointments to see me is that they are experiencing some discomfort in their gut. This could include minor symptoms such as bloating, constipation/diarrhoea and abdominal pain to more serious conditions such as Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease. Most people don’t appreciate that poor gut health can also lead to diverse and seemingly unrelated issues, such as lower back pain, fatigue, migraines, shoulder problems and autoimmune issues. For this reason, most kinesiology treatments will involve identifying and correcting imbalances within the gut. A healthy body needs a healthy gut.

It is little wonder to me that many people are confused about the guidelines for healthy eating. We are constantly bombarded with contradictory information and studies regarding what is healthy and what will kill us. We have been told to lower our fat consumption, eat our 5 (or is it 7?) portions of fruit and veg daily, eat whole grains, go vegan, go carnivore or ketogenic and so on. I believe that most people who care about their health also care about what food they put in their bodies. So what should we eat if we are conscious of making healthy choices? In short, “real food”.
